The current state of Architecture Theory
an (experimental inclined toward intuitive) architectural theory:
oscillate architectural design falls into three types:
intuitive architectural design
theoretical architectural design
experimental architectural design
with the three types forming a triad, thus each type can incline towards one or the other.
e.g.
the architecture of Frank Gehry -- intuitive architectural design inclined toward experimental architectural design
the architecture of Peter Eisenman -- experimental architectural design oscillating between theoretical and intuitive architectural design
the architecture of Le Corbusier -- theoretical architectural design oscillating between experimental and intuitive architectural design
Gothic architecture -- experimental architectural design inclined toward intuitive architectural design
Beaux Arts architecture -- theoretical architectural design oscillating slightly between experimental and intuitive architectural design
the architecture of Louis I. Kahn -- started as theoretical architectural design and ended as experimental architectural design inclined toward intuitive architectural design
the architecture of H&dM -- experimental architectural design inclined toward intuitive architectural design
the architecture of UNStudio -- theoretical architectural design inclined toward experimental architectural design

Somewhat Incompletely Louis I. Kahn (being finished)
I went to the local gas station/convenience store to buy a pack of cigarettes last night. Waiting in line at the counter I noticed a picture of a hi-rise building implosion on the front page of (Monday's) Philadelphia Inquirer. I looked closer, and sure enough, the Louis I. Kahn designed Mill Creek Housing towers were imploded Sunday morning 24 November 2002.
This past August, when I was going around taking pictures of Kahn's local (to) Philadelphia works for Somewhat Incompletely Louis I. Kahn, was the first and only time I every visited Mill Creek Housing. I did take a number of pictures of the towers and the likewise abandoned adjacent low-rise housing as well. There's no question that I especially treasure these pictures now.

Re: hh canvased
...regarding your musing of an exhibit of extreme appropriation, see the work of Sherri Levine (for a start). There is much more at issue than your questions (simply) suggest. A familiarity with Duchamp's modus operandi vis-a-vis his own work may also further illuminate your wonderings--the museum exhibit catalogue Joseph Cornell/Marcel Duchamp...In Resonance is also a place to start.

Re: Microsoft's eHomes
I've been sending most of the last week or so organizing the domestic (cad) databases in Quondam's collection in preparation for a forthcoming exhibit/publication simply entitled Domestic Databases. Right now I'm just checking out and becoming more familiar with what Quondam has, but I'm also trying to evaluate what kind of potential such a collection of data holds. For example, might architects find it interesting and useful to design homes/housing with such databases at hand? Or, might the product of architects be a house design plus an accompanying 'domestic database'?
What if more and more homes have walls of large screens--instead of paint or wallcovering, just select what you want the wall to look like from the database--family portrait gallery today, museum gallery tomorrow, live feed from the space shuttle the day after. Design here is no longer about controlling the way things look or are arranged, rather about providing choice and potential.
These are just very preliminary ideas, and not exactly original, but the point is that architects could well be more and more the designers of domestic content.
